Governor Herbert needs to end his Executive Order

My Response to Governor Herbert’s Executive Order placing Utah under “Moderate Risk” Protocols

On Tuesday April, 30th, Utah Governor Gary Herbert issued an Executive Order that as of May 1, 2020 the state of Utah was formally placed under “moderate risk” protocols for COVID-19. Governor Herbert said “We can now cautiously relax some requirements, and allow businesses that were closed to operate with safety measures in place.”

“I join all Utahn’s in expressing gratitude that the loss of life from the COVID-19 disease has not been greater. I continue however to be very concerned and saddened by the economic devastation that has occurred in the lives of countless Utahn’s because of the “one size fits all” approach that our state leaders have taken. The state’s actions over the past several months are a powerful example of the truth Thomas Jefferson taught when he said “The government closest to the people serves the people best.”

“As of May 3rd, 11 of the state’s 13 local public health departments have each reported 2 or fewer deaths from COVID-19. Utah and Salt Lake Counties are the only exceptions with 9 and 31 deaths respectively. I live within the boundaries of the Bear River Health Department which services Box Elder, Cache and Rich counties. Although the Bear River Health Department has reported only a single COVID-19 death, we are under the same restrictions placed by Governor Herbert as Salt Lake and Utah Counties. 5 public health departments have reported no deaths and they too are under the same restrictions.

“I strongly urge Governor Herbert to end his Executive Order and allow the government closest to the people to serve the people. I further urge our state representatives to speak up for the 3 million Utahn’s they represent. Utahns are strong and smart. When taught correct principles such as social distancing they will wisely govern themselves to good health and prosperity.”

Mike Petersen is running for Utah’s 3rd Legislative District on a platform that focuses on lowering tax rates, reducing the size of government and listening to and implementing the will of the people.
